MEMPHIS, TENN., December 4, 2024 – West Cancer Foundation, a Memphis-based nonprofit that provides free cancer services to those in need and funds research to improve cancer care, today announced the launch of its free mental health counseling program. The program provides mental health counseling by licensed therapists at no cost to cancer patients—including those undergoing active treatment and in recovery—as well as their caregivers. Those who may be experiencing mental health challenges and qualify financially will be eligible for six counseling sessions and potentially more.
The sessions can either be in person or virtual via telehealth conferencing. West Cancer Foundation will also provide free transportation to and from the in-person sessions as part of its ongoing transportation program that offers complimentary rides to cancer screenings, appointments and treatment.
“As anyone who’s been diagnosed with cancer knows, it isn’t just a physical battle, it can also be a significant challenge to deal with the mental and emotional aspects of having cancer or losing someone to this devastating disease,” said West Cancer Foundation President Leighanne Soden. “It’s been proven that a healthy mind and positive outlook can improve cancer treatment outcomes, but that isn’t always easy for the patient or their caregiver. Our goal with this new program is to remove any stigma around mental health treatment so they can receive the support they need to improve their quality of life and focus on getting well.”
The free mental health counseling program, which was funded by an anonymous donor, expands West Cancer Foundation’s other free cancer services which include transportation, breast and prostate cancer screenings, post-surgery garments and prostheses, and wigs at the Sweet Wig Beauty Boutique, all at no cost.
