After thoughtful consideration, and on the counsel of medical experts and oncologists, West Cancer Foundation has made the difficult decision to postpone West Fight On 2021 due to the recent surge in COVID-19 and predominant Delta variant cases in Memphis and surrounding areas. While the Foundation stands firm and more dedicated than ever to combatting cancer, the safety of participants, volunteers, vendors, and staff remains the first priority.
“I am fully in support of the Foundation’s decision to postpone their annual event. While we are all disappointed, it is the right decision to protect the participants and volunteers, many of whom are in active treatment or survivors of cancer. If you haven’t received the vaccine, please seriously consider it for all our sakes. I also urge everyone to continue to support the work of the Foundation to provide much needed programs for the underserved in our community” said Dr. Kurt Tauer, preeminent oncologist in the Mid-South. Dr. Bill West, who serves as Medical Advisor on the Board of Directors of the Foundation, concurred with the opinion provided by Dr. Tauer.
Steve Wishnia, President of the Board of Directors stated “We are grateful for the overwhelming support we have received from our community. As our signature fundraising event, the dollars given are critical to the research, education, and patient support programs we fund. We look forward to being able to gather later this year, but until then, stay safe, healthy, and keep fighting cancer with us.”
According to Executive Director Leighanne Soden, the Foundation has funded over $550,000 in research and education over the last year, in addition to providing transportation, breast screenings, lymphedema and post-mastectomy garments for the cancer patients in need. This is only possible through the generosity of donors who have continued to make a difference throughout the coronavirus crisis.
